Description:
Astor is adorable with a capital "A"! Astor is a scruffy little boy who is estimated to be around 7 years old. He is a little character who is not afraid to ask for what he wants. He loves his people and is pretty darn cute with his little walk and smile. Astor weighs about 9.5lbs. Six years ago Astor was adopted from the YCSPCA by a nice older lady who subsequently moved with Astor into a “pet-friendly” retirement community. Unfortunately, Astor did not adjust well to the move and management there determined that Astor was no longer welcome due to the defensiveness of his owner when the staff came into the apartment. So, sadly, Astor’s mom had to relinquish him so that we could find a home that was a better match for him. He’s been in a foster home since then, hanging out with his foster mom and some doggie roommates. Astor tends to be fearful, perhaps due to negative early life experiences. This causes him to be sensitive about being touched when he isn’t ready to be social. He likes to be petted but can get overstimulated and will communicate when he has had enough. After a visit to the vet, Astor is now on two anti-anxiety meds, which have helped him be much less fearful. He still can be sensitive to handling now and then but is comfortable with his foster mom rubbing his tummy, picking him up, and cuddling him on her lap for a while. Astor needs a peaceful new home that can go slow with him and win his trust so that isn’t afraid and anxious. Astor seems to prefer the company of women and takes more time to warm up to men. He will likely do best if he continues his medications. Astor would be best in an adult-only home. We don’t know how he is with cats since his foster home doesn’t have any, but he could do well living with dog-savvy cats with a slow introduction and proper supervision. Astor would like to be the only dog in his new home. Astor enjoys going for walks and will be patient with having his harness put on if it doesn’t involve a lot of fuss. He could easily keep his harness on all the time since he doesn’t mind it at all. He also likes to play with toys. Astor is house-trained, but like any male dog, it’s best to keep track of him when he’s in the house so he doesn’t mark on furniture. Surprisingly, Astor is a very quiet guy - he’ll bark at strangers at the door or gate, but is otherwise very quiet, unlike some dogs his size. Are you the right family to give Astor a peaceful new home? Aster's adoption fee is $250. Apply to adopt here! https://form.jotform.com/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (www.yolospca.org) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm and started on preventatives and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption.
