Male Dog, Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (Medium Coat)

Description:

Meet ProteinAge: Estimated 4 yearsBreed: American StaffordshireProtein is a dog with a challenging past and a cautious nature, but he's slowly learning to trust again. When he first arrived at the shelter, Protein was extremely defensive and exhibited mild offensive aggression, lunging and barking at staff members. Interestingly, he seemed more at ease with the finder who brought him in, a sign that he can build connections with people in the right circumstances.Current Behavior:In the kennel, Protein appears very frightened and often curls up tightly in the corner. He was initially resistant to interacting with staff, but through patient care, including the use of behavior medication, he's showing signs of warming up. When offered treats, such as meatballs, he cautiously accepts them. Recently, during a staff interaction, Protein showed progress—after some initial avoidance and tension, he began to relax and wag his tail once staff sat on the ground and offered him treats.Summary of Interaction:•Avoidance: Initially backs away from being leashed, bites at the leash.•Whale Eye: Displays nervous behaviors like whale eye and tail tucked, indicating fear.•Gradual Warm-Up: After some time in the play yard with staff sitting on the ground, he approached and allowed some petting. His tail untucked, and he even wagged it, showing progress.•Returning to Kennel: Protein returned to his kennel more calmly and without issue, indicating that trust is slowly building.Looking For:Protein is looking for an experienced, patient home where he can continue to build trust and confidence at his own pace. With continued positive reinforcement, patience, and care, Protein has the potential to become a loyal companion to someone who understands his needs.
