Female Dog, Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler
Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (Short Coat)
Description:
Location: NY Meet Rhodie! This almost 2 year old UTD, spayed girl is lovable, playful, intelligent, healthy, and an incredible athlete! Rhodie (full name Rhododendron) needs an experienced ACD owner who is ready to meet her needs as a high drive dog. She is a wonderful dog: athletic, intelligent, charming, and loyal. She is housebroken and has a wide vocabulary of verbal and visual cues that cover the basics (“sit,” “down,” “stay,” “here”, “leave it”) and more (“crawl,” “middle,” “roll over,” “bow”, “close the door”). Her marker word is “yes” and she learns quickly. Rhodie loves to play “clean up” in the evening and she knows the names of about 20 of her toys (“bone,” “green ball,” “giraffe,” “tiger”). Rhodie loves playing tug, catching frisbee, and chasing her herding ball. She goes to daycare weekly for socialization and she has some doggo friends there. With structure and routine, she’ll happily sleep at your feet after playtime (for a few hours, anyway). In the evening, she’ll snuggle up next to you on the couch (once she’s given up on bringing you all her different toys). Her crate is her safe place and she’s fine there if you need to leave for a few hours (no separation anxiety). Rhodie’s personality makes living with her easy, fun, and rewarding. Rhodie LOVES hiking and swimming and would make an amazing hiking/backpacking partner! Rhodie has reliable recall in most situations (a running deer was too hard to resist) and is an ideal hiking partner. As a typical ACD, she’s an incredible athlete. Rhodie can be leash reactive and will bark forcefully at large trucks/trailers and mowers, other dogs or people at a distance. With firm corrections and consistent redirection she is able to move on. Cats are a NO for Rhodie, and fenced in yard would be preferred. Young kids might be a little bit too much for this busy girl. A few "quirks"...Rhodie hates taking baths and will tuck her tail and refuse to come to you if you say “shower.” She also hates having her paws touched or held. We’ve been working on counter conditioning this so that we can trim her nails, but there’s a long way to go. The vacuum and hair dryer are fine, but the blender is definitely evil. She’ll tolerate brushing her teeth only for a minute or two. Rhodie is a typical heeler in many ways: a high-energy Velcro dog with a strong, quirky personality and irresistible charm. Her beautiful coat, playful smile, and natural friendliness will steal your heart; her incredible athleticism, drive, and need for mental and physical activity will keep you busy.
