Male Dog, French Bulldog

French Bulldog / English Bulldog (Short Coat)

Description:

Age: 9 mos (DOB 11/10/23) Weight: 25-30 lbs Location: Wilmington, DE Nicknames: Chummo, Chummy, Chumbley-Wumbley, Little Man Good with other dogs?: Yes. Chumlee is a feisty pup and can get a little rough at times. He goes after ears, tails, etc. but does accept correction from our older dog. He has not met many other dogs yet. We are working on taking him places and socializing him. Good with cats? unknown, will not be adopted to a home with a cat Good with children? yes Activity Preference: other: due to his health concerns we limit walks to being very short. He'll let you know when he's tired. IQ: Average Chumlee's favorite things: Chumlee loves playing with another dog but can be chill on his own as long as his people are there. He loves his raw food and he loves raw marrow bones. His favorite toys are ALL OF THEM, ALL OF THE TOYS PLEASE. He plays tug with the best of them and is stronger than he looks! He needs to be with his people and is a velcro dog through and through. He likes to give kisses and gets very frustrated if you don’t let him kiss you. He will be respectful of redirection though. Chumlee is good at: meeting people, meeting dogs, going for car rides, playing Ideal home: another dog, someone at home most of the day, a fenced yard, other: raw food, few/no stairs Training Needs: socialization with dogs, leash training, needs obedience training, other: basic manners, He's a puppy Health issues: Chumlee was born with Spina Bifida but it's a very mild case. He does not need diapers or any special care really. He's been checked out by an Orthopedic surgeon and a Neurologist and got two thumbs up. He is potty trained and can hold his urine but cannot "go" on his own. We assist him by expressing his bladder which is VERY easy to do. He holds still for his "squeeze". Unfortunately, he has no control over his poo but this is why he's on raw food. With a consistent raw diet, it's always well-formed and super easy to clean up. He gets around well but walks on his hocks a bit. He loves to run, jump, and play and has gotten stronger from playing with our larger dog. Because he doesn't walk normally, we do have to keep his toenails trimmed because they don't wear down like other dogs' nails. With two people it's an easy job. One holds him and the other trims his nails. Meet Chumlee Chumlee was born with a birth defect and his breeder couldn’t sell him. They took him to a vet for euthanasia. The vet wouldn't do it and reached out to rescue. There is no cure for Spina Bifida and no surgery to be performed but he is living a happy, normal, and fun-filled life now that he's in rescue. He is not a difficult dog at all. He is potty trained and just needs a "squeeze" (express his bladder) about 4-5 times a day. Then we wipe him with a baby wipe to keep him clean and fresh. He eats raw food twice a day with a little pumpkin in it. He doesn't have control over his poo habits but tends to go when he's asleep (and relaxed). As long as he's on his raw diet, it's always well-formed and easy to clean up. You just pick it up with a bag and that's that. He loves to play with other dogs and loves meeting people. He's also a super guard dog. He will bark to protect you from all the noises but isn't bothered by fireworks, thunderstorms, etc. He's very food-motivated and easy to train. He knows "sit" and "come" and is working on "stay". (Since he always wants to be with his people that's a tough one for him.) His ideal home would be with someone who wants a constant companion and will not crate him for long periods of time. He does not like the crate at all. We think he spent the first few months of his life confined to one. He has free run of the house and can be trusted not to demolish things except his own toys. He LOVES toys and playing with other dogs but does ok on his own too. He loves to lay on the floor and chew on a marrow bone or a lamb shank. Because he's short (part French bulldog), he cannot climb stairs very well. He can handle 3-4 steps but really no more than that. He will need a ramp or will need to be carried if your home has many stairs. To be considered for adoption, you must apply using our free, online application. Our dogs are fostered in our volunteers' homes, not in a central shelter/location. Only approved applicants are put into contact with the foster family to setup a meeting with the foster dog. Visit our Adoption Policies web page for more information and a link to our application: http://americanbulldogrescue.org/adoption-policies/.
