Male Dog, American Staffordshire Terrier

American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (Short Coat)

Description:

Meet Trevor! Trevor was spotted roaming around PG County as a stray for over a week, a county that has historically banned his breed. He was seen going up to walkers and other dogs on the street seeking attention and was clearly a young dog. WDR adopter and local animal advocate, Pink, was worried for his safety and brought him home. Trevor is the 5th dog Pink has rescued from her Riverdale, MD community, and WDR has found forever homes for each of them. Now it’s Trevor’s turn. Trevor is currently bunking with Pink and WDR alum Bella. He easily integrated into their home and has become good pals with Bella. He wants to play with her but also respects her space, and he seems most content if she’s around. If he notices she’s out of view, he will anxiously start searching for her. Trevor quickly picked up on the rules of home life - he is housetrained and has learned how to use the doggy door. Pink reports he is very well-mannered in the home, with no running or unscheduled chewing. He will bark at noises and people outside, but that improves as he settles in and got more familiar. While Trevor is a young pup he has a moderate energy level. He loves going on walks but needs work on his leash skills. He gets two daily walks and some playtime in the yard for fetch and romping with Bella. He likes to play catch but after a few throws, he gets bored. Mostly he wants to follow Pink around the house and cuddle when she settles down. He loves a bone to chew on and enjoys his toys, but more so when he and Bella compete for the same one. They have done very well sharing. We checked in with Pink for a quick Q&A: Personality? Confident for sure and very snuggly! Have you seen him around kids? I have not seen him around young kids - but I think being kind of a puppy himself, he’d be great with them. I think he would cuddle up and watch Dora the Explorer all day long if you let him and be very gentle. Does he meet new people and other dogs well? He greets new people and visitors very well. He's had a mixed experience meeting new dogs. He did well meeting my friend's female German Shepherd who visited us but reacted to another friend’s male dog. He needs a gradual, managed introductions to new dogs. Trevor is a delightful dog to have around. He is so happy with his routine! He enjoys mealtime - he has quite the appetite! He enjoys Bella’s company and has certainly taken the role as her little brother. He wants to hang out with her, but his main focus is the human. He is very cuddly and simply adores attention. He will sleep through the night and only gets up in the morning when I get up. I fall in love with all dogs I take in, but if there were to be a favorite, I would say Trevor is the one." What I love about Trevor: So smart So handsome So cuddly So well behaved (at home) So connected with me/humans I love that he’ll get up in the morning when we (Bella and I) get up I love that when he is done at mealtime he won’t bother Bella if she’s not I love that he follows Bella inside when I leave for work and that they are both looking out the window with joy when I pull up FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 8/15/24 Trevor does well with his bestie, Bella, BUT has some challenges meeting new and unknown dogs on leash. We brought in a trainer to assess Trevor and work with Pink to improve his leash skills. The trainer feels that much of Trevor's reactivity comes from uncertainty and not knowing what to do on leash vs. aggression. He is reactive and lacks confidence in what to do. He will bark/lunge to avoid interaction with unfamiliar pups and really needs a leader who will work with him and teach him what's expected. He needs repeated exposure to work through his uncertainty. After two sessions, we checked in with Pink for a training update: "He is doing better - He doesn’t react to dogs in their own yards anymore, but still will react to dogs passing by nearby. He pulls when I walk with Bella, but if he is pulling too much, I stop and he walks back towards me and slows down his stride. Improvement is steady, I would say!" ******* We are looking for a loving family with dog experience (preferably someone who has worked with leash reactivity) to help Trevor be his best self. He's such a sweet boy with a social nature and a great disposition with all people. He's good with kids too and can have good a positive dog relationship, but it needs to be the right match. He'll need his new family to have patience and do a gradual introduction to make it work. Apply for this handsome boy today!
