Male Dog, Spaniel

Spaniel / Chihuahua / Mixed (Medium Coat)

Description:

Meet Max! This little fella came to us so scared after having been found on an abandoned property. He is now in a foster home and is coming around. He is 9 months old and just 14 lbs. of absolute cuteness. Max does require some gentle handling. He is easily overwhelmed or scared and can nip if you don't give him time to adjust to the situation. Patience and kindness are needed since Max was so terrified and undersocialized when he arrived with us. He has done terrific in his foster home but is still a work in progress. Max is awesome, from his evening zoomies to showing off how great he is about going potty, such a big boy now! He loves his walks and hikes and will enjoy them heartily. Max is curious about people who pass on the trail as he politely moves to the side (walks after them, sniffing) on. He loves being home — would cuddle or chill nearby 24/7 if he could. If you have a lap and lots of love, he says he's in! Total champ in his crate! He whimpers but quickly settles down whether overnight or a few hours. Often prefers to snooze in his crate. He didn’t love the very cushy dog-bed he was offered (too fuzzy? too new?). Funny boy. Learning to love the car! Having a car ride where I was seated next to him (in the back) really helped him, as did going to a place where he got lots of treats. Warms up to friends in no time! Not yet convinced other people are worth meeting but in time.... For crowded areas, he’s a brave sweetheart if he’s in a sling. Loves chewing! Minimal attempts to chew socks or shoes, and is happy to be redirected to his toys. Not motivated by treats if he’s nervous, but peanut butter wins every time. Does great at bath time, and has no issues with his paws or nails or ears or face being handled. He can at times guard his favorite possessions from people when he thinks they will be taken. This behavior requires some experience to manage - our trainer can help with advice. We do not recommend Max for a home with kids. His fear can take over when people move too fast with him. Older kids over 14 will be ok provided they can go at his speed and give him space when he needs it. Max is vaccinated, neutered and chipped. His adoption fee is $525. We cover the medical to prepare the pet for adoption and the adopt donations go directly to cover those costs and range from $295-$495. Thank you for stepping up to save a life! To expedite to meet with this dog, please go to our site at www.savinggreatanimals.org and fill out an application. We look at the first applications to arrive, so we hope to hear from you soon!
