Female Dog, Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retriever
Description:
Silver is a very special, unique beautiful six year old (~55 lb) Silver Labrador lady. Though she has had a very rough start to her life, she is sweet as sugar with a heart of gold once she learns to trust & feel safe. She was rescued in October from an Amish breeder and from what we can tell, spent almost all of her life in a kennel & was used only for breeding without exposure to much of anything else. She has come a long way in her short time in Wisconsin and her foster family has spent a lot of time working with her to expose her to different things. She is making positive steps (literally and figuratively) every day but she's going to need an experienced owner to ensure she is (and feels) safe and comfortable in her new environment so she continues to thrive. It's early in her new life - she has made tremendous progress in a very short time. With the right environment and person, she will be a wonderful, sweet forever companion.Consistency, patience, praise, practice & extra doses of TLC is what she'll need to flourish.Personality/Temperament: Very timid, shy, not confident (but gaining confidence & doing new things every day!) Sweet, quiet, calm (but can switch to "flight" mode in a heartbeat/spooks easily) We have not heard her bark She has not chewed on or destroyed anything Is housetrained (but needs a bit of coaxing out of her crate at times. Crate trained Does well in the car (some nervousness) Tolerant of dogs that we can tell (but is selective right now in the early stages of rescue) No aggression to humans at all. She has growled at our resident dogs if they approach her too quickly but has never done anything more than that. Even with all the lifting we've had to do w/ her, though she has a tendency to freeze/stiffen, she has never made any aggressive move towards any human. She is getting used to physical touch and no longer flinches when we reach out to pet her. She loves snoozing while we sit quietly petting her. She seems to LOVE and relax with soft music. Takes treats gently (and cautiously now from my hand) Will take a toy and carry it to her crate, chew or lick it while she figures out the squeaker No exposure here to cats, kids or other animals. Requirements: Due to Silver being newly rescued and her heightened fear of everything new in her world, she will need an experienced owner who is committed to giving her consistency, dedication, slow exposure to new things, and most of all, patience, praise and tons of TLC. In turn, she will be a loyal, gentle, loving and kind companion for you. We have been giving her small challenges (staying outside a bit longer to let her relax enough to take in smells, sights & have less fear of the big world outside), introducing her to better food, treats, blankets, toys, etc to help her be able to "dog". A fenced in (not underground) yard is required - due to being a (proven) flight risk. A comfy quiet space for her crate she can go to when she feels anxious but encouragement to venture out with slow intros to new places in the house.Fostered in Monticello, WI.Adoption application: www.diamonddogsrescue.com/adopt-a-dog/adoption-application-dane-county-wisconsinTo adopt this dog, please complete an Adoption Application.
